Practice really does make perfect: Why having regular sex increases your chance of having a healthy baby

Making love builds up a woman's immune system needed to enable a healthy pregnancy

  • Chances of rejection and miscarriage are greater for a one-night stand

It may sound obvious but couples who want to have a baby should regularly have sex first, say scientists.
A study found women had a better chance of having a healthy baby if they had repeated exposure to their partner's sperm before they conceived. This was because it gave their immune systems time to build up a tolerance to the foreign fluid and so support a pregnancy.
Want to have a baby? You're more likely to have a healthy pregnancy if you've had some practice beforehand
Want to have a baby? You're more likely to have a healthy pregnancy if you've had some practice beforehand
Research author Prof Sarah Robertson from the University of Adelaide, said: 'We now know that an average of at least three to six months coitus with their partner is necessary to get their immune system to respond correctly to enable a healthy pregnancy.'

She added that this process could take up to a year for some couples.

While couples are able to get pregnant from a one-night stand, Prof Robertson said the chances of rejection and miscarriage are far greater as are pregnancy complications like pre-eclampsia.

'You're more likely to have a healthy pregnancy if you've had some practice beforehand.'
'It's not so much about the likelihood of getting pregnant, it's more about health progression of pregnancy,' she told
    adelaidenow.com.

In the UK around one in six couples have difficulty conceiving. A couple will only be diagnosed as being infertile if they have not managed to have a baby after two years of trying.

Miscarriages are much more common than most people realise. Around one in eight pregnancies end in miscarriage where the woman knows she is pregnant - many more end before she realises she is pregnant.

It is thought that two thirds of early miscarriages are due to abnormal chromosomes in the babies.

Losing three or more pregnancies in a row is uncommon affecting around one per cent of women.

The latest fertility research will be presented by Prof Robertson at the Australian Society for Medical Research Congress in Adelaide.

Plan International committed to Village Savings and Loans Association(VSLA)

The Director of Plan in Tanzania Mr David Muthungu(left) notifying on Plan activities in the country with Nigel Chapman who is Chief Executive Officer at Serena Hotel.

    By FRANK KIMARO

The Global Charity Plan International (Plan) has introduced Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA) to Rural Communities for supporting them in accessing loans to foster agricultural productivity and small business enterprises.

The Chief Executive Officer of Plan in the world, Mr Nigel Chapman made the remarks at a press conference to inform the public on different activities in to which Plan is involved at Dar es salaam yesterday.
Mr Chapman said that Plan had joined hands with other organizations to introduce VSLA groups across the country and up to the moment different members have joined those groups saying that majority of them are women.

“There are more than 4,000 VSLA groups with more than 80,000 members across the country; Good numbers of them are women. I think we will reduce poverty as we offer cheap loans to rural communities,” he said.

Mr Chapman further noted that his organization has been supporting government to develop policies which are helpful in reducing child oppression and violence.

“Plan has also been supporting the Tanzanian government to develop policies that stem the high incidence of violence against children especially teenage pregnancies and child labour. This has led to decline of Child abuse in the country,”

The Director of Plan in Tanzania, Mr David Muthungu said that VSLA program involves also children just to inculcate a culture of saving money among children and youth.

“The involvement of children in VSLA is helping instill a savings culture among children and as they learn about money management at an early stage in life,” he said.

Plan is the Non Government Organisation which has been working in Tanzania for the past 20 years supporting under privileged children and help poor communities gain access to health, education and sanitation and currently 1.6 million have benefited from it`s program.
